Science Homework

Homework all week: Use http://www.edheads.org/activities/simple-machines/ as a tool to practice simple and compound machines. Discussions are also set on Edmodo.

Design Day!

Today was the big day: Students thought like engineers as they designed a Rube Goldberg Machine. Consensus: sketching out the ideas is hard.

Levers

Scientific investigation to understand levers: We proved with data that the position of the fulcrum is important!

Homework

Homework every day: Bring in clean recyclables, old toys..... Anything that would be trash, but could be used for our machines instead.

Writing Update

Thank you parents for your responses on your student's writing reflection a couple of weeks ago. A large amount of you requested that your child focus on adding more details, thus taking the writing to a deeper level. As a response to this we spent this week dissecting the five elements of plot in good literature. By studying this structure good authors use, we will allow for and focus on transfer into their own writing. It has also helped us become closer readers. It's always nice to get 2 for 1!

We also practiced using a thesaurus to eliminate the "boring" words and spruce it up. Next week we will use the (electronic) visual thesaurus. Man I wish they had one of those when I was in elementary school! But, that wouldn't have worked since it wasn't needed for Oregon Trail! ;)

Writing Contest!

Did you hear we're entering a writing contest? We're busy dissecting great literature to see just what the authors do. Thank you to Mrs. Smithson for sharing the contest with us and meeting with small writing groups throughout the week.

Last day of spirit week.

Wear spirit wear for SCA spirit week.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Our turn!

Here's the email that was just sent out:

Quick reminder: We are the docents tomorrow. Wear nice pants and I have student t-shirts and name badges. 8:45-9:35am will be docent practice. We have three elementary schools coming. Two in the am and one after lunch. Practice what you'll say in a mirror. Don't forget to smile! If nervous- re-watch docent training and talk it out with someone. Parents, e-mail or message me any questions!

Thanks,
Melissa Follin
